To respond to this brief I have used
both analogue and digital methods combined. Digital work is something I usually
struggle with Photoshop and my work usually comes out looking unfinished.
However, in this brief I feel accomplished and I am proud of the different
outcomes.
This brief has made me realise that I enjoy
editorial work and I want to push my practice into that direction.
My intentions for this brief were to
make work that may initially seem light-hearted but there is a hidden meaning
behind the humorous mask which expresses my views on veganism and almost mocks
George Orwell for being so ignorant towards it.
The colours I have chosen are similar to
the usual approach that other practitioners take when they think of Orwell
which I could have experimented with further which could have possibly
benefitted future briefs. Although, the images work well as a set as I chose to
use the same two colours throughout the set (even though we had the option to
change the two colours throughout the different formats).
I am happy with the scuzzy effect that I
have managed to create using Photoshop which is always something that I try to
achieve in my practice. Working digitally is not something that I am usually
comfortable although I pushed myself out of my comfort zone to challenge myself
and I am pleased with the overall outcome.
I attempted to play with visual metaphors
although I struggled to think of any even when my possible ideas were a lot
more open. I initially found it difficult to not be too literal with my visual
ideas which I found hard to overcome at the start of the brief.
As the brief progressed I became a lot
more interested in editorial work as it is a strong way to visualise my political
and social awareness. Making a joke out of serious issues is something I find
easy. I agree with Orwell’s views on the most part, but I found it interesting
to find something that we could both disagree on.
Overall I am content with the outcome of
Studio Brief 1, the tone of voice is clear throughout each piece and the
colours that I have used contrast with each other. If I were to do the brief again
I would experiment further in my development as I think the designs would work
well with the overlaying values that are created through screen print.
