Colour, Value and Notan

What role does value play in planning composition? - The lightness and darkness that can change the mood of the whole image.
How can we use values to focus attention on certain information? - Making different areas light or dark. If a large part of the image is the same tone it loses the viewer's attention. The more contrast the more focused the viewer is on that area.
What are the most commonly used basic value plans? How many values should be used in a picture? - Light against dark, dark against light, dark and halftone against light, light and dark against half tone. Normally an image should have 3/4 basic values.

To practice getting used to pointing out colour, value and notan in an image we looked at other artist's work and sketched the different tonal values of each image. This has helped me become more aware of this when looking at other work as well as being aware of it when creating my own work.
